In the process of trying to become a better technical writer, it's important not to overlook the essential skills that allowed you to become successful in the first place. No matter how far you come in your career, there are some things you simply should never overlook:
Proofread your work: Even when you're under the tightest deadlines, make time to proofread your work at least once. You may be a brilliant technical writer, but letting your work go out with spelling and grammar errors is just plain sloppy. It may also be enough to convince your clients you're not the best person for the job.
Submit your work on time: Remember, deadlines are always set in stone, and it's up to you as a technical writer to work out a schedule that will let you meet each and every one of them.
Follow instructions: A technical writer's greatest asset, aside from his technical knowledge and writing ability, is his ability to follow instructions exactly. Consult the guidelines given to you by your clients regularly while you're working on projects, and take some time after you're done to ensure you've complied with all their instructions and wishes.
Always treat your clients with respect: Very few business people are successful if they don't provide great customer service, and that goes for freelance technical writers as well. Always be respectful and courteous towards your clients. After all, they are the people responsible for paying your bills.
